Dog tags for military men and women are often put on beaded neck chains made from either silver or brass.  These dog tags are used for identification purposes in case a soldier gets injured or killed.  Military personnel wear dog tags around their neck as well as having them tied into the shoelaces of their boots.  The extra set is there in order to make identification easier.  To avoid having the dog tags fall off, the best chain, usually a brass beaded neck chain, is used to keep the tags secure.  If something does happen, the military can look for the dog tags in order to facilitate identification.  Many family members will not fully accept the news until they either see the body or the dog tags.
